'Dolores' & 'Viceroy's House' Open Strong Specialty Box Office - Deadline

The Specialty box office had a good number of competing newcomers this Labor Day Weekend, but two titles did especially well as of Sunday. PBS Distribution’s Sundance documentary Dolorescame in with the weekend’s best per theater average, though in just one location at $14,125, while IFC Films’ Viceroy’s Housetook in $44,736 in four theaters. Pantelion/Lionsgate’s Do It Like an Hombrebowed in 382 locations grossing $1.25M in the three-day. Other openers included Tulip Fever (765 theaters, $1,214,602); Valley of Bones (300 theaters, $101,962); The Vault(11 theaters, $4,700); A Boy Called Po(10 theaters, $1,675). Neon added runs for Beach Rats, holding fine with $44,607 from 8 runs Friday to Sunday. Oscilloscope added two locations for Polina in its second frame grossing $22K, while the 3D re-mastered Terminator 2: Judgment Day shed theaters in its second weekend, grossing $166,688.

Dolores was a favorite at the Sundance Film Festival back in June and its theatrical roll out appears to have tapped some of that momentum. The doc was the first acquisition title released by PBS Distribution. Dolores played exclusively at IFC Center in New York, grossing $14,125.

“[Dolores] is so timely right now. We decided this should be our first major release,” said PBS Distribution’s Erin Owens earlier in the week. “I think it being Labor Day was a natural hook for us. Dolores herself is immensely popular, and she has a huge following. We find that when we screen it, there are more and more people following the film. Requests from exhibitors and the public have been great.”

PBS Distribution

Owens added that pre-sales of Dolores have been “selling like hotcakes” in California where the film will open next throughout the state. It will also add locations in other areas of the country including Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

IFC Films opened Gurinder Chada’s historical drama Viceroy’s House starring Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville as Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last viceroy of India closing out the Raj. The title had a pretty good start grossing $44,736 in four theaters, averaging $11,184. The film is also available on-demand.

“I feel it has an ability to expand,” said IFC Films’ Arianna Bocco this past week. “It’s a day and date release, so we’re going to try and get to those audiences wherever they may be. We’re messaging that it’s an upscale art house film that will satisfy all the elements of drama.”

Other openers that drew sizable audiences were Pantelion/Lionsgate’s Do It Like an Hombre, which played 382 theaters grossing 1.125M, averaging $2,945 in the three-day period, while TWC’s Tulip Fever opened in 765 locations, grossing over $1.2M for a $1,588 PTA.

Beach Rats

Neon added five runs for Eliza Hittman’s Beach Rats. In 8 theaters, the film starring Harris Dickinson grossed $44,607 Friday to Sunday, averaging $5,576. Beach Rats opened last weekend in three theaters taking in $45K for a $15K PTA. It has cumed $125,139.
