House of the Week: Phoenix estate blends ‘European flair with an Adirondack feel’ - syracuse.com

PHOENIX, N.Y. – Sometimes it is funny how life works out.

Consider Stephen Dates about five years ago.

He was looking to move back to his hometown of Phoenix in Oswego County. He loved the small community and wanted his daughter to attend the great schools there.

He hoped to build a home in the area but was having trouble getting the necessary building permits.

On Father’s Day 2014, while he was at his sister-in-law’s house, he saw the fantastic home at 64 Ostrander Drive, but it did not really make an impression on him.

But there just happened to be an open house there that day. He went inside and fell in love.

“The timing was just right,” he said.

Designed by architect Lothar Meier for his daughter in 2003, the listing says the house “one of a kind executive estate” blends an “Adirondack feel with a European flair.”

Outside, the house is built on over 11 serene acres on a dead-end road. A creek winds through the property and flows into the Oswego River. An old solid bridge crosses the creek. There are two ponds and an apple orchard. Hunting and fishing are possible, and Dates says the grounds have jogging and four-wheeler trails.

A few years ago, Dates added a saltwater heated in-ground swimming pool with a stone waterfall feature.

Inside, the house is a masterpiece of craftsmanship.

Solid maple wood doors with transom windows greet visitors in the foyer. The gourmet kitchen features top-of-the-line appliances and flows easily to the unique step-up dining room.

A two-story stone wood-burning fireplace and two gas fireplaces, one in the dining room and another in the massive family room in the finished basement, keeps the 4,324 square foot home warm in the winter.

Dates says there are fantastic views from every room of the house, including the spacious master bedroom on the second floor, which includes a balcony perfect for an evening cocktail.

He works in the technology industry and smart home technology runs throughout the house.

Every single room is hardwired for the internet, making Wi-Fi unnecessary.

A PBX telephone system screens solicitors’ calls and enables phone conversations between the individual rooms of the house.

It is possible to control the lighting and music through one’s smartphone and the house employs a radiant heating system in the flooring through the living room, foyer kitchen and basement.

While Dates has expanded on a lot of this, he credits the original architect for building such an exquisite home.

“He thought of everything,” Dates said. “It must have cost a million dollars to build all of this.”

After five years there, Dates wants to try something new.

“I want to live on the water,” he said.

But he will miss the home he discovered unintentionally.

“I really have loved it there. It has been a wonderful place to live.”

An open house is scheduled for Sunday, December 29, noon to 3 p.m.
