MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI -- Despite a homeowner’s ongoing attempts to forestall the impact of lakeshore erosion, a beloved family cottage fell from its foundation on New Year’s Eve.
MLive captured drone footage of the aftermath: the nearly century-old, 1,206-square-foot house dramatically angled down a sandy slope, far from its concrete foundation. Waves lap at the remnants of walls, windows and cherished household objects.
In an interview with MLive, homeowner Patricia “Tish” Gancer said she was still “numb.” She was at home in Battle Creek when a neighbor texted her to share that the house, which had been in her family for five generations, had fallen.

Once set back from the water by beach, dunes and woods, the house ended up on the edge of a bluff in recent years. Stormwaves and near-record water levels sped up the erosion process recently; one October storm ate away as much as 30 feet of shoreline in some places. Ultimately, the erosion outpaced Gancer’s attempts to allay its effects with a rock wall.
A retired school counselor and band director, Gancer, 55, said it had been a “privilege” to have access to the house for so many years, and to get to share it with friends and family - some of whom had stayed there as recently as this summer.
“It’s my grandpa’s cottage, it’s not a resort,” she told MLive. “So many people have so much invested in this place.”
“Everyone is just so thankful of every day we had there,” she added.
