Keep your house safe while traveling for the holidays - WXOW.com

Eau Claire (WQOW) – Before you pack up and travel for Thanksgiving, police want to remind you to lock your doors and make it look like you’re home.

Police said before you leave, let a neighbor know you won’t be home and have them check on your house.

They said it’s not a bad idea to have someone remove the snow from your driveway and sidewalks. That will make it look like you’re still around. Another important tip: never give too much information away on social media, especially when you’ll be leaving and how long you’ll be gone.

“It’s also important to maybe not post on social media when you’re gone that way, anybody that can see it knows that you’re gone and knows that your house is empty,” said Eau Claire Police Officer Josh Miller. “Avoiding that until you get back is usually a good idea.”

Miller said it’s also not a bad idea to have the post office hold your mail or have a friend pick it up.

He said around this time of the year more people are stealing packages.
