Kaleb Artis already has offers on the table and Rutgers is on the radar for the class of 2022 defensive lineman from St. Francis Prep (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.). Artis has visited Rutgers twice, but most recently was on campus March 8, where he got to meet the new coaching staff for the first time. This included a sit down with head coach Greg Schiano who outlined his plans to rebuild the program into a winner.
“The new coaches there are great,” said Artis, who is New York's No.2-ranked prospect in the class of 2022 per 247Sports. “I spoke to a lot of coaches, some of them I've seen before. I just felt very welcome and that's what you want to feel when you go somewhere that’s recruiting you. I like how they were speaking on their future with the team and then what they want to do and how they want to build it up there. I liked what I heard and how the coaches were speaking with me, and everybody else there, and my family liked it as well. So I had a good time.”
Artis also mentioned how Schiano explained the TFC (Trust, Family, Chop) motto and the reasoning behind it, saying he has to trust his teammates and have everyone in the program on the same page because it is a family.
During the visit, the 6-foot-4, 263-pound New York native got to speak with new defensive line coach Jim Panagos, who showed lots of interest in him and sees Artis as a great fit and a top priority for the Scarlet Knights.
“He was very enthusiastic and he loved my presence and I loved the energy that he was giving me,” Artis said. “We spoke about defense, of course. We spoke about a few key points on the d-line and things that will go on if I went to Rutgers and I really liked it because the energy he was giving me, I gave it back to him and that's what I like.”
Artis told Scarlet Nation he already knows Rutgers’ quality control coach Scott Vallone, who he met last year at a football camp while he was coaching at Fordham. Artis remembers Vallone well because he was always pushing him extra hard when he got to his station.
“I spoke to Coach Vallone a lot,” Artis said. “I have a little background with him and I had a good click with him as well so that's important to me when I look at where I want to go in my future to get to the next level of my football career. I see what I like, what type of coaches they have at Rutgers and how they speak to me and everything like that.”
Along with Rutgers, Artis has received offers from Pitt, Syracuse, Tennessee, William & Mary, and Fordham, Artis added that before the coronavirus pandemic set in, he was starting to plan out his summer visits to schools like Notre Dame, Nebraska, and Ohio State, who all sent him schedules of their events.
Due to the COVID-19 circumstances, Artis isn’t scheduled to return to his high school until April 20 and possibly beyond. In the meantime, he works out every day at home and said this time is actually a benefit.
“It’s a mental game,” he said. “I have to stay ready no matter what and work out. I’m working out every day and staying on top of my game and eating right as well. All of that is really important. Coaches from Rutgers reach out to my head coach saying that they wish me and my family the best, which means a lot during this time.”
Currently, with six offers, Artis does not have any preferred schools at this time.
“I would never favor anything or put anything in order,” Artis said. “If I don’t feel the chemistry and the energy, not only with the head coach but the d-line coach and the strength coach (at any school), then I really have to see if I want to be there. It’s all about how you personally feel about it.”
