House of the Week: Cazenovia home has ‘old house character’ with modern conveniences - syracuse.com

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – In 2012, after eight years living in England, Halley MacNaughton and her husband, Steve Druce, returned to the United States, after he accepted a teaching position at Syracuse University.

With some trepidation, they began looking at setting down some roots in Central New York.

She was from Westchester County, New York; her husband was a native of Chicago. While neither place are a stranger to cold winters, the couple was a little apprehensive about their new home’s fearsome reputation.

“We really did not know what to expect,” she said.

They looked at several places, looking for something that felt like home and a place where their friends and family could gather for holidays and celebrations.

Then they looked at the quiet peaceful Craftsman-style home at 2076 Wright Road in Cazenovia and found exactly what they were looking for.

Although the house was built in 2007, MacNaughton fell in love with what she calls the home’s “old character” which was blended with all the current modern conveniences.

From its wide, inviting front porch, to the rich and cozy interior, with its unique woodworking, built-ins and glass-fronted cabinetry, she calls the house “super-comfortable and well-built.”

Worries about the frigid winters were put to rest when sitting in the family room with stone-front wood burning fireplace.

“We spend a ton of time there,” she said, “surrounded by our books and crafts.”

Her favorite space is probably the chef-equipped kitchen.

She calls it “amazing,” and a “pleasure to cook in.”

High quality appliances are joined with granite counters, stone tile and cherry wood cabinets.

A convenient Butler’s pantry provides ample storage and a beautiful formal dining room, separated from the kitchen by French doors, creates a wonderful place for entertaining.

Accommodating visiting guests is a snap with the home’s 1,000 square foot partially finished walk-out lower level which has a bedroom and full bath.

The home is on built on almost one acre of wooded landscaped property, with stone features and pathways and “some really neat gardens.”

They have spent many warm summer days, eating their lunch and dinner, on the back patio watching their children enjoy the natural setting.

“It is really magical,” MacNaughton said.

She calls the property to be “really peaceful” and appreciates that the house is less than a mile, within walking distance, to the town of Cazenovia.

All the worrisome feelings of the past are long gone. The town has become their home.

“In Cazenovia,” she said. “you always feel like you are a part of the community.”

After what she calls “six happy years at the house” the couple are moving. But not very far.

They have moved into the town of Cazenovia itself, into a house built in 1832.

An open house is scheduled for Sunday, December 22, from noon to 2 p.m.
